Key Fields of Expertise

Ziel
WU is inviting proposals for the establishment of up to five Key Fields of Expertise. Key Fields of Expertise are cross-departmental, agile research areas in which WU has a strong track record and can deliver internationally recognized excellence. They highlight, establish, and consolidate strong cross-departmental research areas, replacing the previous “Research Highlights” system.

The Key Fields of Expertise are driven by a bottom-up process and form part of a university-wide effort to define WU’s research strengths. In terms of their content, Key Fields of Expertise are characterized by topicality and high quality, as demonstrated by publication output and expertise in attracting third-party funding. They are also broadly rooted in WU’s research activities.
Betrag
Basic financial resources and a fixed-term senior scientist position to coordinate activities are allocated to each Key Field of Expertise to ensure that the Key Fields of Expertise can function as drivers of the continuous further development of existing research areas. The Key Fields of Expertise serve as hubs for attracting third-party funding and implementing third mission projects, and they are intended to play an active role in the WU research landscape.
Voraussetzungen
The Key Fields of Expertise are specifically intended to strengthen WU’s research profile. They provide a framework to unify strong areas of investigation that go beyond the key research areas associated with WU’s individual departments, complementing them in a meaningful way. The Key Fields of Expertise provide an intellectual home to researchers who want to engage in interdisciplinary work or pursue activities outside their main field of research. They encourage networking within the university and increase the visibility of WU’s research outside of the institution.
The following general conditions apply to ensure the agility that is needed and to support interdisciplinary cooperation across departments: Application guidlines for a Key Field of Expertise

Entscheid
Evaluation process
  • Decisions will be announced in spring 2026.
  • Applications will be selected by a committee: The composition of the selection committee is chosen at random and consists of 6 academic members and 1 student member. Members will be drawn from different departments (maximum 1 member per department; 1 member from a law department is mandatory). Committee members will not participate in voting on their own proposals.
Selection procedures
To ensure transparency and the involvement of the WU community, the Research Committee is involved in the process. The Research Committee specified the selection criteria and will organize the selection committee. Up to five Key Fields of Expertise will be established under this call:
  • Up to three Key Fields of Expertise will be selected by an in-house selection committee consisting of WU researchers with a proven track record of excellent research and research grants. The members will be selected through a randomized procedure.
  • Up to two Key Fields of Expertise will be selected by the Rector’s Council.
  • The Key Fields of Expertise will be reevaluated every five years.
Frist
November 30, 2025
Information
  • Networking event: On October 7, 2025, starting at 4:00pm (in the Executive Academy foyer), we’ll be holding an event to exchange ideas on possible Key Fields of Expertise, where you’ll have the opportunity to get in touch with potential partners or join existing initiatives. Groups intending to apply are strongly encouraged to participate.
  • Funding for research areas that are not selected: Building networks strengthens our research culture and is part of WU’s strategy. Therefore, the Rector’s Council—supported by the WU Foundation—will also offer non-selected groups the opportunity to apply for seed funding to further develop their collaboration toward a potential future Key Field.
If you have any questions, please contact the Research Service Center at forschungsservice@wu.ac.at.
