Abstract
Sustainable development follows three moral imperatives, namely satisfying human needs, ensuring social justice and respecting environmental limits. If responsible innovation is to serve sustainable development, the same imperatives apply to the practice of responsible innovation. Although it has been acknowledged that responsible innovation shall not harm people, but improve the conditions for the planet and humans, a more profound understanding of the nature of humans, i.e. their needs, lacks. A literature review on human needs reveals that a nuanced sense of what human needs are allows for better targeting and assessing responsible innovation. We exemplify this assertion by means of Maslow's theory of motivation and Max-Neef's Human Scale Development model.
