In this paper we focus on immigration removal detention centres (IRDCs) as an extreme context. We consider IRDCs as ‘total institutions’ in Goffman’s (1961) sense. Drawing on the example of our ethnographic research in four Austrian IRDCs, operated by the police, we discuss what it means for an organization to prevent and to deal with the possibility of extreme events in a total framework. A central question that we address in this context is the role of the detainees and the interaction between the employees and the police officers. We believe that in research on total institutions it is important not to restrict the organization to staff and management. We assume that the inmates of total institutions are a relevant part of organisational everyday life and therefore must be taken into account for research on extreme contexts.
