Abstract

The mechanisms of dyad formation, proximity have been on scholarly agenda for some time. The raise and multiple scholars’ calls for a dynamic approach to networks has nudged scholars also to study tie formation and its drivers in a non-static way. Contributing to this stream of research, we investigate how the importance of repetition, status (relational mechanisms) and geographical proximity (proximity mechanisms) change over time. We collected data from various sources representing approximately 90% of chartering and sales transactions reported between counterparties providing vessels to others, in need of thereof, from 1999 until 2018. We further implement a quasi-experimental approach to compare the importance of mentioned mechanisms before and after the financial crisis of 2008.
