Abstract

With the aim of helping to develop lexicographic search strategies among students of L2 Spanish, we carried out an empirical study to establish the specific use of lexicographic resources made by both teachers and students. We observed and recorded their use of such resources, the order in which they were consulted and the strategies both user groups applied in translating a technical text from German to Spanish. The analysis of the results obtained shows minimal differences between the strategies of students and teachers. Although the former looked up more items and consulted more resources, they took no longer than the instructors to find solutions, and these displayed a similar degree of accuracy to those of the teachers. These findings suggest that before teaching students of L2 Spanish about how to use lexicographical resources, it is necessary to train teachers in their use.
