Abstract

While the agentive and locative function of the Latin suffix ‑aria has already received due attention in the literature, collective nouns and their augmentative and intensive offshoots are only mentioned in passing in the classic manuals. The present paper investigates how these latter uses arose and what presence they have in the different Romance varieties. It will be seen that they reached their maximum diffusion in the Iberian Peninsula, and that derivatives of this type tend to concentrate in a small number of semantic niches.
