Abstract

Projects are recognized as strategic and important in organizations for bringing about growth, organizational change, innovation, value creation and benefits. The management of the network and hierarchy of projects through organizational project management (OPM) within the project oriented organization can lead to optimized value creation and benefits, sustainable competitive advantage, and sustainable business. However, the management paradigm of sustainable development (SD) and the concept of sustainability goes beyond the traditional individual concern of the corporation. It compasses a world system where organizations and projects operate and in which human wellbeing is supported by economic growth in harmony with the natural environment and societal concerns for present and future generations. SD is about value creation and benefits for a broad group of stakeholders and is rooted in transdisciplinary content and SD process. The goals of OPM and SD are potentially aligned and reinforcing. The integration of SD in OPM will enhance value creation by projects. At the same time, it will require dynamic management enabling flexibility for learning, adaptation, emergence and transformation at the project, program, portfolio and strategic levels of the organization. Dynamic management occurs around the interface of organization and project SD benefits. The chapter discusses a benefits framework, the SD Benefits Keystone, for appreciating the issues related to the integration of SD as a dimension of OPM.
