Abstract

The collective meaning of the Spanish Suffix -ero (e.g. mosquero 'swarm of flies'), which has traditionally been considered a Carribbean Innovation, is shown to have ist roots in metonymic extensions that are already attested in the dialects of Castile, Andalusia and the Canaries. What has changed, is the range of application and the productivity of the suffix.
