Abstract
The theoretical section of this paper looks at developments in the social positioning of school dropouts over the last decades. The empirical section of the paper presents the main findings of a recent qualitative study in which the information obtained from 50 narrative interviews with 'early school leavers' (dropouts) was used by examining the thought and perception patterns strategies of the young persons for coping with the situation and the consequences of leaving school early. Experiences with stigma are the common thread that runs through all six habitus types. After a description of the six habitus types the topic of stigmatization is discussed with references to Erving Goffman and Pierre Bourdieu.
