Abstract
Emphasizing the cultural contextualization of diversity management refers to the need of local adaptions of the US-biased management concept (Nishii and Özbilgin 2007; Syed and Özbilgin 2009; Hanappi-Egger and Ukur 2011). As a consequence, more and more publications are becoming available that contain examples of how diversity management is interpreted and realized in various cultural and national contexts, such as in Australian, Asian, African or European countries (Klarsfeld 2010). Nevertheless, there is still a lack of international comparisons of diversity management particularly with regard to the role of US companies for the diffusion of diversity management. The starting point of diversity programs outside the USA is often related to organizations' connections to the US market. For example, in many European countries, diversity management was introduced by US companies such as Ford or IBM. For South America, the strong position of US companies and the geographical proximity can be seen as a major reason for the similar emerging tendency in diversity management. Nevertheless the intensity, strategic focus and specific realization of diversity management significantly differ between the continents and also between the different nations. Both Europe and South America internally are highly heterogeneous constructs. Thus this paper takes as two examples the most important language areas of each continent, in economic terms: the German-speaking area in Europe and the Portuguese-speaking area in South-America. Drawn from a historical and neo-institutional perspective, a framework is proposed to categorize the different approaches to diversity management.
