Abstract
The recent position and role of SMEs in regional development are endangered by the consequences of financial crises. Regulations (Basle III) are punishing the wrong: the credittakers and taxpayers not the banks. There again and furthermore the ongoing Dollar attac against the Euro is setting up a scenario which threatens much more than Basle III. SMEs are appropriate addressees to build a green economy: (1) they are regionally, societally and culturally embedded, (2) they mostly cover basic needs (including communes provision of infrastructure), (3) are the place where professional and private life overlapps more than in bigger ones.
