Abstract
Energy systems are currently put under pressure regarding ecological sustainability and security of supply. With its specific governance structures cooperatives seem to be a suitable legal form for renewable energy projects with citizen participation. Our analysis contributes to the understanding of cooperative energy production on community levels especially regarding the following aspects: (1) general framework conditions, (2) resources required, (3) roles of actors involved, (4) organization of renewable energy projects, and (5) the cooperative as a suitable legal form for renewable energy projects with citizen participation.
