Abstract
Decreasing public funding and the trend towards marketization in the spirit of New Public Management concepts have caused a growing pressure on federal museums to increase their financial revenues without jeopardizing their academic and educational mission. Museum shops are expected to support the museum's mission by supplying products that aid in education, enjoyment and the extension of the visitors' relationship with the museum. In the course of a mixed-methodology study aiming at gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural consumption of the visitors of the shop of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, their purchasing behavior was researched. The findings are discussed against the background of the museum's mission, its public mandate and the related values.
