Abstract
The optional, XOTcl [1] based components of the OpenACS Framework were developed since the acceptance of TIP #87 [2] to make XOTcl a pre-requirement in OpenACS installations. The most prominent OpenACS packages are xotcl-core (the basic functionality) and XoWiki (a wiki based content management system developed with a Web 2.0 mindset; see e.g. [3,4]). Currently, 7 packages in the public cvs system make use of the object oriented concepts of XOTcl (xotcl-core, xowiki, xotcl-request-monitor, chat, s5, dotlrn-xowiki, xowiki-portlet). One of the primary challenges of the endeavor to provide more object orientation on top of the pre-existing object oriented concepts of OpenACS is to improve reusability and flexibility (e.g. via subclassing existing classes to add specific functionality). During the development of the mentioned packages, several deficits arose, that will be addressed in this presentation. ● Object oriented access/development for all types of acs-objects ● Ability to subclass packages (make packages first class citizens, resolubility of package parameters) ● Scalability of property management (package parameters, portal parameters) ● Subclassing of Widgets ● More flexible cluster management ● Improved composability and personalization through a more powerful portal system The presentation will focus on the last point, where some weaknesses of the existing dotlrn portal system are analyzed, some additional requirements are identified and a prototype implementation is presented.
