The PREPARE summer institute held in Bratislava in July 2007 covered "The Modelling of (Spatial) Interaction". During this event a unique dataset was collected that was designed to analyse a knowledge network of the participants. The questions concerned past, present and future knowledge flows among the participants. An extremely satisfying response rate of 100% offers particularly promising results about the interaction among young scientists in regional science. The dataset includes additional attribute data that allows the analysis of additional meta-networks. The goal of this paper is to uncover the structure of knowledge flows for a set of specific knowledge networks that represent inputs and collaboration during the summer institute. Analysing these networks offers the possibility to assess the success of the summer institute by giving a detailed account on the interactions amongst researchers and their respective sub-fields (mainly spatial interaction models, discrete choice modelling, spatial econometrics and social network analysis). The analysis includes the use of social network analytic techniques that are particularly suitable to study interactions (Wasserman/Faust, 1999 or Freeman, 2004). Descriptive measures, including the calculation of local and global metrics, accompanied by visualization techniques will act as a starting point for the identification of sub-groups. Of particular interest is where groups, which were identified on the basis of interaction, differ from attributional groups (e.g. did participants receive valuable inputs from sub-fields other than their own?). A set of hypotheses will be developed to test whether inputs and collaboration focus on the own sub-field or if there are particular contributions among the main themes of the summer institute. Techniques such as blockmodelling will be employed to test for characteristic structures (e.g. do core-periphery structures define the networks or are they largely egalitarian?).
