Abstract

Ascending dynamics in urban reality draws much attention once again in the Central European area. After calm earlier stage of transition and beginning of political integration with the rest of the continent this region's settlement system appears to stand at the starting point of a new development phase. In some aspects trends described in the Western societies are repeated here. It becomes sure that a new urbanization cycle, long predicted but unnoticed during the whole 1990s has arrived. It also becomes sure that several elements of the responsible public institutional network are not ready to manage this process appropriately in behalf of sustainability. Suboptimal change potentially endangers not only environmental values but also long-term functional structure of the city itself or the nature of its society. Development in the primary economic center impacts indirectly the rest of the country as well. Urban simulations have ability to bring at least a small light in the seemingly unpredictable future having many (un)practical consequences of region's spatial planning and its lack. Traditional selectivity in research of urban dynamics is responsible for a relatively low applicability in real practice. Intersection of quantitatively strongly supported demographic research with urban morphology studying evolution of built environment can effectively explain, place in a wide context and predict what should follow present changes. Decision-making sphere would become better informed of consequences linked to current actions. In search for future development scenarios for Bratislava, several relevant aspects of similar situations in the past are reviewed in and outside the region. Crucial is to answer the question of internal migration dynamics.
