Abstract
Purpose Many companies are being forced to internationalize their operations in order to remain competitive. At present, we are witnessing a very specific situation in Europe: Despite geographical proximity, major economic differences exist between Western European countries and the formerly socialist Eastern European countries. The main objective of this study is to develop a better understanding of internationalization decision processes in this specific context. Methodology/Approach By means of multiple case study research, we analyze six Austrian and five Hungarian companies in order to extend and refine existing theory on internationalization decisions given the current situation in Central Europe. In particular, we use extant literature to build a conceptual framework from which we derive propositions as a basis and a guide for data collection and analysis. Findings First, we construct a framework for conducting internationalization projects. The specific context and its effect on the framework are identified (differences in economic and social culture, cost differences and proximity). In addition to cost considerations, process and product innovations are becoming increasingly important dimensions in explaining the reasons for internationalization projects. The reasons for internalization and solutions (relocated products and processes, entry mode and location) are closely interrelated. Research limitations/implications: In general, our findings are closely linked to the context of our research. Therefore we specify this context in detail in order to ensure the necessary rigor and to enable further research based on our results. Our selection of the variables and relationships which make up the conceptual model is also based on our experience and consideration of the related literature.
